How to start preparation for UPSC Civil Services Exam ?

The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) exam is one of the most competitive exams in India, conducted annually to recruit candidates for various civil services positions in the country. Covering a wide range of topics, the UPSC syllabus requires thorough preparation and a strategic approach to succeed.

UPSC Syllabus:

Preliminary Examination:

General Studies Paper I: Includes topics like current events of national and international importance, history of India and Indian National Movement, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, Environmental Ecology, and General Science.

General Studies Paper II (CSAT): Covers comprehension, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision making, problem-solving, general mental ability, basic numeracy, and English language comprehension skills.

Main Examination:

  • Paper A – Indian Language: Candidates need to choose one Indian language from the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. This paper is of matriculation or equivalent standard.
  • Paper B – English: This paper is of matriculation or equivalent standard.

General Studies Papers:

  • Paper I – Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society
  • Paper II – Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International relations
  • Paper III – Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management
  • Paper IV – Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
  • Optional Subject Papers: Candidates can choose one optional subject from the list of subjects provided by UPSC. Each optional subject has two papers.
  • Essay Paper:
    • Candidates have to write essays on multiple topics.

Interview/Personality Test:

Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for an interview which carries 275 marks. This is to assess the candidate’s personality, leadership qualities, and suitability for a career in civil services.
